Garner, the seat of Hancock County in north-central Iowa, was a small farm town in 1907, when its economy rested on the surrounding land. Corn, oats, and hogs moved through local grain elevators and stock yards, and creameries took in cream from dairy farms. Like many Iowa towns of the period, Garner depended on the railroad for shipping and on Saturday trade from nearby farm families, who came in by wagon to buy goods and conduct business at the courthouse. Its streets, churches, and business blocks reflected a community that measured its progress by harvests, land values, and the steady growth of its schools. A panoramic view from that year preserves how the town sat on the open prairie, with the courthouse and commercial district anchoring a settlement that its residents knew as a center of county life.
