Eagle Grove, Iowa, in 1907 was a small farm town in Wright County, in the north-central part of the state, where its economy rested on corn, oats, hogs, and cattle raised on the surrounding prairie. Rail lines brought in lumber, coal, and building supplies and carried grain and livestock out to larger markets, so the depot and stockyards were central to daily commerce. Local life centered on the main business streets, churches, schools, and lodges, and residents who lived through the decade would have known the town chiefly as a trading center for the farms nearby. The fall of 1907 brought the Panic of 1907, a sharp financial crisis that tightened credit in towns like this one, though the wider farm economy in Iowa had been strong in the years before.
