Eagle Grove, the seat of commerce for the farm country of north-central Iowa's Wright County, was a railroad town in 1912, and its economy rested on the surrounding corn, oats, and hog farms. Grain elevators, lumber yards, and stores near the depot shipped and supplied that farm trade, and the town's businesses depended on the rail lines that connected it to larger markets. In 1912 Iowa farmers were enjoying strong prices for their crops and livestock, which showed in the brick storefronts and the growing number of automobiles on the streets. Broadway, the town's main commercial street, was where residents shopped, met friends, and watched parades on holidays. For the people who lived there, Eagle Grove meant a steady, practical community built around agriculture and the railroad.
