Dyersville, Iowa, in 1912 was a small farm-trade town in Dubuque County, in the northeast part of the state, where most of the economy rested on grain, livestock, and dairying. Its population was shaped by German Catholic settlers, whose parish built the large stone basilica that still anchored the town's skyline and drew worshippers from the surrounding countryside. Main Street merchants, grain and produce buyers, and the local creameries served farm families who came to town on weekends to trade, attend church, and do business at the courthouse seat in Dubuque. Like many Iowa towns of the period, Dyersville was still a place where a wagon or a rail connection could decide whether a business prospered, and residents would have known it chiefly as a quiet, church-centered community with a strong sense of its German roots.
