Dubuque, Iowa, in 1907 was a river city of roughly 40,000 people, built on the Mississippi bluffs where lead mining had drawn the first settlers. Its economy rested on river trade, rail connections, and factories that made machinery, wagons, and boats, along with breweries that served a large German population. Steamboats of the Diamond Jo Line carried passengers and freight north toward St. Paul and south toward St. Louis, so the riverfront was a busy place of landings and warehouses. Catholic schools and churches, including Loras College and the academies run by the Sisters of Charity, shaped civic life as much as commerce did. The view below shows a town that people then knew as a working river port set against steep limestone hills.
