Independence, the county seat of Buchanan County in northeastern Iowa, was in 1907 a farm-trade town set along the Wapsipinicon River. Its economy rested on the surrounding corn and hog country, with grain elevators, livestock sales, and merchants supplying farm families who drove in on Saturdays. Rail connections to nearby towns and larger markets such as Waterloo and Cedar Rapids tied its farmers to the wider Midwestern grain and meatpacking trade. Civic life centered on the courthouse square, churches, and the schools, and residents of the period would have known the town as a steady agricultural center in an era of rising farm prices and modest growth.
