In 1907 Keokuk, Iowa, sat on the Mississippi at the state's southeastern corner, across the water from Hamilton, Missouri, and it lived by the river. Steamboat traffic had long been shaped by the Des Moines Rapids just upstream, which made Keokuk a place where cargo was often unloaded and reloaded. The town's industries included manufacturing, with the Hubinger starch works among the notable employers, and rail lines brought goods and passengers into the city from the surrounding farm country. Residents knew Keokuk as the river town named for the Sauk and Fox leader Chief Keokuk, and many were proud of its place in the early history of the upper Mississippi.
