In 1907, Marshalltown was a county seat and rail center in central Iowa, and its economy rested on the farms that surrounded it. Grain elevators, livestock sales, and lumber and coal yards served the rural trade, and the town's rail connections carried farm products out and manufactured goods in. Lennox Furnace, a company that made heating equipment, was among the local manufacturers that gave the town an industrial side alongside its agriculture. Residents of the period knew Marshalltown as a place where a growing population of merchants, railroad workers, and farm families shared a busy commercial downtown, churches, and schools, in a state where the early twentieth century brought steady prosperity to the countryside.
