In 1907, Muscatine, Iowa, was a Mississippi River town whose best-known business was the pearl button trade. Factories along the riverfront cut and polished buttons from shell that clammers gathered from boats on the river bottom. The industry had given Muscatine a national reputation for buttons, and mill hands, shell cutters, and the workers who sorted and finished goods made up a large share of the local workforce. Townspeople would have measured their city by the whistles of these factories and by the boats that carried finished buttons and shell out of town, even as the mussel beds that supplied the trade were already being worked hard.
