Oelwein, in Fayette County in northeast Iowa, was a railroad town in 1907, shaped largely by the Chicago Great Western line that ran through it and by the yards and shops that came with it. Railroad work gave many residents steady wages, while surrounding farms sent corn, oats, hogs, and dairy products to market through the town's depots and grain elevators. Like many small Iowa communities of the period, Oelwein's civic life centered on its downtown business blocks, churches, schools, and lodges. Residents of that decade would have known the town first as a railroad stop and a trading center for the farm country around it.
