Clarion, the county seat of Wright County in north-central Iowa, was in 1907 a small market town serving the farms around it. Its economy rested on corn, oats, and hogs, and the local farm trade, with its stores, grain elevators, and lumber yards, drew families in from the surrounding countryside on Saturdays. Through the 1900s, farmers across Wright County invested in tile drainage to dry out the low, wet ground that had long limited crop yields, and the prosperity that followed shaped how the town looked and how its residents spent their money. Clarion's residents knew it as the place where county business, court days, and church and lodge gatherings brought the whole rural district into town.
