Clinton, Iowa, in 1907 was a river city on the Mississippi, and its economy still bore the mark of the lumber boom that had made it one of the state's busiest sawmill towns in the decades after the Civil War. By the early 1900s the nearby pineries were largely cut over, so mills and lumber yards were shifting toward other work, while the river, the rail lines crossing the Mississippi, and the factories along the waterfront kept freight and jobs moving. The city's streets, churches, and commercial blocks reflected a community that had grown quickly with the timber trade and was now settling into a more diversified manufacturing base. For residents, the view from the bluffs and the riverfront was a familiar sight of work, commerce, and the steady traffic of boats and trains.
