Colfax, a small town in Jasper County, Iowa, in 1907 was shaped by coal mining and by the mineral springs that had drawn visitors for years. Mines in the surrounding country employed many local men, and the railroad carried coal and farm goods out to larger markets. The town was named for Schuyler Colfax, who had served as vice president under Ulysses S. Grant, and residents took pride in that link to national politics. Summer guests who came to take the waters filled the hotels and bathhouses, adding a seasonal rhythm to the town's life. Through the year, shifts at the mines, church and lodge meetings, and the comings and goings of the railroad set the calendar for families there.
