Cresco, Iowa, in 1907 was the county seat of Howard County in the northeastern part of the state, a farm town whose fortunes rose and fell with the surrounding fields of corn, oats, hogs, and dairy cattle. Railroad lines running through the town carried grain, livestock, and dairy goods to larger markets, and the depot and freight yards gave local merchants and shippers a direct stake in the region's crops. Like many Iowa county seats of the period, Cresco centered its civic life on the courthouse square, its churches, its schools, and the brick commercial blocks along Main Street, where farm families came to trade on Saturdays. Residents in 1907 would have known their town mainly as a market and service center for the farms around it, a place where the railroad and the harvest set the pace of the year.
