In 1907 Davenport, Iowa, was a Mississippi River city with a broad industrial base, drawing on river shipping, rail connections, and factories that made goods for the surrounding farm country. The country had been shaken that October by the Panic of 1907, when bank runs and failing trust companies tightened credit and slowed construction and hiring in many Midwestern towns. Davenport was also known for an unusual institution, the Palmer School of Chiropractic, founded there in 1897, which drew students from across the country and gave the city a reputation beyond its riverfront. For the residents who looked at a panorama of their town that year, the view would have shown the streets, church spires, and business blocks they knew, along with the river that had shaped the place from the start.
