Woodward, a small town in central Iowa, was photographed in 1907, when the state's economy rested on corn, hogs, and cattle raised on the surrounding farms. Over the previous half century Iowa had built a dense web of railroad lines, and towns like Woodward relied on depots and grain elevators to ship crops to larger markets. In 1907, rural communities across the state were arguing over road improvements, school funding, and the automobiles that were beginning to appear on their main streets. A view of the town would have shown residents a familiar scene of stores, churches, and houses lined up along the streets, marking a period of steady, modest growth.
