Washington, Iowa, in 1907 was the county seat of Washington County in the southeastern part of the state, and its fortunes rested on the farms around it. Corn, oats, hogs and cattle moved through local elevators, stockyards and rail depots, while merchants on the square sold machinery, dry goods and groceries to families who drove in on Saturdays. Iowa farmers had enjoyed good prices in the years before 1907, and that prosperity helped support churches, schools and business blocks around the courthouse. Residents would have known their town as the center of county business, court days and fraternal lodge life.
