Clarinda, the seat of Page County in southwest Iowa, was in 1908 a farm trading town whose economy rested on corn, hogs, and cattle raised on the surrounding prairie. Railroad connections carried grain and livestock to market and drew farmers into town on market days, giving the downtown around the county courthouse much of its daily life. Churches and schools were central to local society, and the community took pride in its orderly county center. Residents would have known Clarinda as a quiet agricultural seat, and it was the birthplace in 1904 of Alton Glenn Miller, who would later become a famous bandleader after his family moved west while he was still a boy. The panoramic view records the roofs, streets, and courthouse grounds of a place still defined by farming.
