Britt, a small town in Hancock County in north-central Iowa, was a farm trading center in 1908, when its economy rested on corn, oats, hogs, and dairy cattle sold through local grain elevators, creameries, and stockyards. Railroad lines that had reached the county in the preceding decades tied these towns to Chicago and Minneapolis markets, so a shipping point could decide whether a town grew or stalled. Like many Iowa towns of the period, Britt's main streets were lined with brick and frame business blocks, churches, and a courthouse-era civic life of lodges, school boards, and town councils. Residents in 1908 would have known the town mainly as a place where farm families came on Saturdays to trade, visit, and haul produce to the depot. Beyond those general patterns of Iowa life, the surviving record of Britt's specific events that year is thin, so the picture is best read as a snapshot of a working agricultural town at the height of its early twentieth-century growth.
