Sigourney, the county seat of Keokuk County in southeast Iowa, was a market town in 1908, built around farming and the railroad that served it. Corn, oats, and hogs and cattle raised on the surrounding farms moved through local grain buyers and livestock dealers, and merchants depended on farm families who came into town to shop and trade. Iowa's farm economy was prospering in these years, and county seats like Sigourney were where courthouse business, church congregations, and fraternal lodges shaped civic life. This panorama shows a community of modest size whose streets and courthouse square served as the center of daily life for people living well beyond the town limits.
