Red Oak, the seat of Montgomery County in southwestern Iowa, was a settled county town in 1908, with its main business blocks lining the streets and the courthouse drawing farmers in for land transactions, court days, and tax business. The year was a presidential election year, and residents followed the contest between William Howard Taft and William Jennings Bryan through local newspapers and at rallies on the square. Merchants, implement dealers, and grain buyers served the surrounding farm country much as they had for decades, and the prosperity of Iowa agriculture in the period kept those trades active. Townspeople would have known Red Oak as a mature community, its churches, schools, and storefronts the product of a generation of growth since the frontier years. The view shows the town's streets and buildings as they stood that year.
