West Union, the seat of Fayette County in northeastern Iowa, was a small farming town in 1908, set among the rolling dairy and grain country of the Upper Mississippi region. Its economy rested on agriculture, with local creameries, grain elevators, and livestock dealing tied to the surrounding farms, and the town was served by rail lines that carried produce and goods to markets farther east. Fayette County's courthouse square anchored civic life, where county business, merchants, and local churches drew families in from the countryside on market days. Photographer F. J. Bandholtz made the panoramic view of the town that year, and residents would have recognized it as a record of their own streets, storefronts, and neighborhoods at a time when small Iowa towns were central to daily life.
