Mount Pleasant, the seat of Isabella County in central Michigan, was in 1910 a town shaped by the cutover lumber economy and the farms that followed it. The Central Michigan Normal School, founded there in 1892 to train teachers, gave the town much of its civic identity, and its students and faculty were closely tied to the public schools nearby. This panoramic photograph of the high school shows a building that served local children as well as the young people of surrounding farm townships, many of whom were the first in their families to attend school beyond the eighth grade. Residents of the period would have known Mount Pleasant as a quiet county seat where schooling, church life, and the railroad's regular trains defined daily routines.
