Michigan in 1913 was in the middle of an economic transformation. Ford's Highland Park plant had opened in 1910, and that year the company began using a moving assembly line for Model T chassis, which drew workers and new residents to Detroit and nearby towns. Farther north, the great lumber boom was tapering off as the cut-over forests left towns searching for new work. Fraternal societies such as the Independent Order of Odd Fellows were a central part of small-town and city social life, offering members lodges, insurance, and ritual gatherings. The Rebekah Assembly, the women's branch of that order, brought lodge members together to conduct state business and to build friendships across the communities they represented.
