Petoskey, Michigan, sat on the shore of Little Traverse Bay in 1913, a town shaped by lumbering and by the railroad that reached it in the early 1870s. By then the white pine that had built the region's fortunes was largely cut, and hemlock bark, stripped from the remaining forests and sent to tanneries, supported many local jobs. The tannery in this panorama turned that bark into leather for shoes and harness, a trade that kept workers and mill yards busy. Summer visitors were also arriving by steamer and rail, so the town wore two identities, a working industrial place and a lakeside resort. Residents would have known Petoskey as both, a town named for the Odawa leader Andrew Petosegay.
