Detroit sat along the Detroit River in 1908, and its waterfront served a city that was growing quickly. Lake freighters, grain and ore carriers, and passenger steamers worked the docks, while ferries carried riders across the river toward Windsor, Ontario. That autumn the Ford Motor Company introduced the Model T, and the automobile trade was beginning to reshape the city's economy and draw workers from across Michigan and abroad. Rail lines linking Detroit to Chicago and the East moved goods through the same riverfront district. Residents knew their city as a center of shipping and manufacturing, and the river gave it both its commerce and its identity.
