Detroit in 1920 was among the fastest-growing cities in the country, its population more than tripled since 1900 as the automobile industry drew workers from Michigan farms, the South, and eastern Europe. Ford, Packard, Dodge, and dozens of parts makers ran around the clock, and housing, streets, and schools struggled to keep up. Fraternal organizations were central to civic life, and the city's Freemasons were building a new temple that would give their lodges a single large home for meetings and ceremonies. The project reflected a city confident in its future and eager to show that confidence in brick and stone.
