Navin Field, on Detroit's west side at Michigan and Trumbull avenues, opened in 1912 as the home of the Detroit Tigers and was one of the larger ballparks in the American League. By 1920 Detroit had grown into the center of the automobile industry, with Ford, Dodge, and many smaller parts makers drawing workers from across the South and from Europe, and the city's population had passed 990,000. That year also brought national Prohibition, which took effect in January and shaped public life in a city that sat directly across the Detroit River from Canada, where liquor was still legal. Crowds at the ballpark reflected this mix of industrial workers, families, and civic groups, and the field was a regular gathering place for the city's large and mostly working-class population.
