Grand Circus Park, Detroit, Michigan, in 1914 sat at the head of Woodward Avenue, the wide boulevard that the city's early plan had laid out in radiating avenues. By then Detroit was among the fastest-growing cities in the country, with its population near half a million, and the automobile industry was transforming its economy. Ford's Highland Park plant had begun using a moving assembly line in 1913, drawing thousands of workers from farms and other states to the city. Around the park, office buildings, theaters, and hotels served a downtown that residents measured by its streetcar lines and its rising traffic. The park's central green offered a quieter break from the commercial bustle that was reshaping the city's core.
