Detroit in 1914 was a river city of roughly half a million people, and its fortunes were rising fast with the automobile. Henry Ford's introduction of the five-dollar day that January drew job seekers from across the Midwest and the South, and the city's factories, foundries, and parts shops were expanding along the Detroit River and the rail lines. Camp Martius, a downtown open space named for the army post established there in 1817, was a natural gathering place for civic events in a city that was rapidly becoming the center of American manufacturing. Residents of the period knew Detroit as a place of Great Lakes shipping, streetcars, and a growing industrial workforce, and a crowd assembled in the heart of town would have reflected that confident, fast-changing city.
