Camp Custer, near Battle Creek, Michigan, was built in 1917 as one of the large army cantonments the federal government raised for the First World War. By 1918 it held tens of thousands of draftees and volunteers training for service in France, and the 85th Division was organized there. The camp took its name from George Armstrong Custer, and it drew workers and supplies from a city already known for its cereal factories, including the Kellogg and Post plants. That fall, influenza swept through the crowded barracks and hospital wards, killing many men before the armistice in November. This view shows how quickly farmland outside Battle Creek had become a city of wooden barracks.
