Camp Custer, near Battle Creek, Michigan, was a National Army training post in 1918, and this view shows the grid of barracks the army laid out on former farmland at the city's western edge. Drill fields and supply yards stretch beyond the rows of buildings, and the men living there were drafted and enlisted recruits learning close-order drill, rifle work, and camp routine. Battle Creek's factories and rail yards carried men, freight, and equipment in and out of the post, so the camp's needs shaped the city's daily traffic. Residents of the town and surrounding farm townships would have known the post as the place where their sons, neighbors, and hired hands were preparing for service overseas.
