By 1918, Camp Custer on the western edge of Battle Creek, Michigan, was a full training center, and its rows of barracks reflected a National Army population that had grown well past its first months. Battle Creek's cereal works, including the Postum and Kellogg plants, were operating during a period when federal food administrators asked households to observe meatless and wheatless days. Residents of a city of a few tens of thousands watched supply wagons and troop trains move through town, and many families canned produce and cut back at home to free food for the army and for Europe. When the armistice was signed on November 11, 1918, the post's training routine began to face an uncertain future, and the town waited to learn when its soldiers would return.
