In 1918 Camp Custer, on farmland outside Battle Creek, Michigan, was training the 85th Division, a National Army unit built largely from draftees. The hospital grounds shown here existed to keep those recruits fit enough to drill, march, and eventually ship overseas. Units moved out for France during the year, and the fighting stopped with the armistice on November 11, 1918, which eased but did not end the pace of camp life. For Battle Creek residents, the post had become a fixture of daily routine, with troop trains passing through the city and soldiers from distant states filling its streets on passes. The town now knew itself as a camp town as well as a factory town.
