Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1917 was a city of cereal plants, carriage and wagon works, and busy rail lines, and that year the federal government chose farmland just outside town for a new Army training cantonment. Named for George Armstrong Custer, Camp Custer went up in the months after the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, and this view of its hospital grounds shows one of the medical areas meant to care for new recruits and draftees. Local residents watched rows of barracks rise quickly, and the construction work brought wages and traffic to a town that had long depended on its factories. Within a year, the camp's wards would be strained by the influenza epidemic of 1918, which struck military posts across the country.
