Detroit in 1914 was a city being remade by the automobile, and the Campus Martius square at the foot of Woodward Avenue sat close to the commercial center where that growth showed. Henry Ford's company had opened its Highland Park plant only a few years earlier, and in January 1914 it announced a five-dollar daily wage that drew job seekers from across the country. The city's population had passed 450,000 by the 1910 census and kept climbing as factory work pulled in migrants from Michigan farms, the South, and Europe. Streetcars, shop fronts, and the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at the square's center reflected a downtown that residents knew as a fast-rising manufacturing city.
