Grand Circus Park in 1916 sat where Woodward Avenue met the city's radiating boulevards, and Detroit was still absorbing the workers and capital that the auto trade had drawn in. The Dodge Brothers had begun building their own cars in 1914, and parts makers, tire plants, and machine shops were spreading across the east and west sides. Downtown streets carried men in work clothes heading to early shifts alongside shoppers and streetcar riders. City leaders argued over paving, streetcar service, and schools as the population kept climbing. The park's lawns and shade trees gave residents a place to step away from that growing noise.
