Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1915 was widely known as Furniture City, a name earned by the many factories along the Grand River that produced chairs, bedroom suites, and case goods for markets across the country. Lumber arriving by rail and river supplied these shops, and the rapids that gave the city its name had long powered its mills. A large community of Dutch immigrants shaped the city's churches, shops, and neighborhoods. Visitors arriving for a convention that year would have found hotels and commercial blocks close to the river, in a city whose economy still depended heavily on furniture manufacturing as Europe's war began to reshape trade.
