Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1915 was a city whose economy rested on railroads and food manufacturing. The Michigan Central main line and its shops brought steady work, while the breakfast cereal companies, Kellogg's and Post among them, were building national reputations and drawing workers from farms across southern Michigan. The John Harvey Kellogg sanitarium also drew health seekers from far away, giving the town a reputation beyond its size. A YMCA in an industrial city like this one offered young men from the factories and rail yards a place for lodging, classes, and athletics, and it was one of the civic institutions where working people and the city's middle class met.
