In 1915 Marshall, the county seat of Calhoun County in south-central Michigan, was a small city whose economy rested on manufacturing, farm trade, and rail traffic along the Michigan Central line that ran between Detroit and Chicago. Carriage and wagon making had been important there in the nineteenth century, and by the 1910s factories were shifting toward newer metalwork and automobile parts as the car reached farm families across the region. Residents of the city knew it for its well-kept Victorian houses and its downtown churches and civic buildings, many of them from the decades after the Civil War. This photograph of Stuart Acres shows a residential tract at the edge of town, where people were building homes on land that had been farmed only a few years earlier as the city's streets pushed outward.
