Port Huron, Michigan, sits where the St. Clair River leaves Lake Huron, and in 1912 that position made it a busy freight and passenger stop on the Great Lakes. Lake steamers, lumber and grain boats, and the Grand Trunk Railway's connection to Sarnia, Ontario, through the river tunnel all tied the city's waterfront to wider commerce. Factories and sawmills along the riverbank, a legacy of the region's timber trade, shaped daily work, and local residents knew the city as a gateway between the lakes and the rail lines of the interior. This view of the river shows the working waterfront that defined the place in that decade.
