Saginaw, Michigan, in 1912 was a city that had outlived its pine boom. The sawmills that once lined the Saginaw River were cutting far less timber as the forests of the interior ran low, and the old East and West Saginaw rivalry had long since ended with the two sides merged into one city in 1889. Local business leaned more on sugar beets grown on the surrounding farms, whose processing brought steady work and trade to the Saginaw Valley. Railroads and the river still moved freight, and residents took pride in the churches, schools, and downtown blocks that lumber money had built. This view shows a settled, working town making its living from a regional economy that was changing around it.
