West Saginaw, Michigan, in 1912 was the western bank of the Saginaw River, part of a city that had been one of the great lumber centers of the Midwest before the timber near it was largely cut. Its mills, salt works, and sugar factory had by then taken over much of the work the sawmills once did, and the river still carried barges and tows past the docks. West Saginaw had been an independent municipality until it merged with East Saginaw and Saginaw City in 1889, so by 1912 residents were used to thinking of themselves as part of one city divided by the river. Many families on the west side worked in the factories and shops, and the neighborhood's churches, saloons, and streetcar lines shaped daily life. The view shows a city that was still growing, though its fortunes now rested on manufacturing rather than on the logs that had first brought settlers there.
