Detroit in 1911 was a fast-growing industrial city, with a population near half a million and streets increasingly crowded with automobiles from makers such as Ford and Packard. The Michigan State Fair, held on fairgrounds along Woodward Avenue, drew farmers, manufacturers, and city families to exhibits of livestock, machinery, and produce, and this panoramic photograph shows President William Howard Taft at the fair. His visit highlighted how much national attention Michigan's farms and factories commanded, even as the auto industry was reshaping work and daily life in the city. Detroiters knew their town as a center of manufacturing and as the host of a yearly fair that linked the urban economy to the surrounding countryside.
