The 1911 Minnesota State Fair took place in late summer at the fairgrounds in the Saint Paul area, where the state had held its annual exhibition for decades. Minnesota had roughly two million residents by then, and much of that growth came from farm families settling the prairie and the cutover north. Minneapolis was the country's leading flour-milling city, and iron ore moving from the Iron Range through Duluth was reshaping the state's shipping, so the fair's visitors saw a state whose wealth came from fields, mills, and mines alike. Families arrived by wagon, rail, and the new automobile, a mix that showed how quickly rural life was changing.
