Minneapolis in 1911 was one of the great milling and lumber cities of the country, with its riverfront along the Mississippi Falls powered by water and fed by flour mills that had made the city famous as "Mill City." The Mississippi Falls at St. Anthony had long driven its industry, and the grain and lumber trades moved through a dense web of railroads that converged on the city. Population was climbing quickly, and the downtown core of office blocks and wholesale houses was rising toward the new skyline that defined the city's self-image. Residents of the time would have known Minneapolis as a booming Twin Cities center, rivaling its neighbor St. Paul in commerce and civic ambition.
