Minneapolis in 1912 was a city of office towers, wholesale houses, and streetcar lines that carried workers and shoppers between the downtown core and the neighborhoods spreading out across the flat land to the south and west. The Twin City Rapid Transit Company ran much of this network, and its trolleys tied the Minneapolis business district to the older commercial streets of the riverfront and to the railroad depots that handled freight arriving from across the upper Midwest. Downtown was also a place of entertainment, with theaters and hotels drawing crowds on Hennepin Avenue, and the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1903 under conductor Emil Oberhoffer, gave the city a concert life that residents took pride in. Those who lived in Minneapolis at the time would have measured their city by its growing skyline and by the steady rivalry with St. Paul across the river.
