Minneapolis in 1912 was one of the largest milling centers in the world, with flour mills clustered along the Mississippi River at St. Anthony Falls, whose waterpower had drawn industry to the site since the 1850s. The city's grain, lumber and railroad traffic made it a hub for the upper Midwest, and its population had passed 300,000 by the time this view was taken. Downtown office towers and wholesale houses rose above the river bluffs, and the streetcar lines carried workers between the mills and the growing residential neighborhoods. Residents of the day knew the city as the "Mill City," a name that reflected how much of its economy depended on wheat, flour and the rail lines that carried them.
