Minneapolis in 1915 sat at the edge of a wartime boom. Europe had been at war since the summer of 1914, and grain prices on the Minneapolis Grain Exchange climbed as Allied buyers sought wheat and flour from the Northwest. The city's large German and Scandinavian communities argued openly over neutrality, and the debate filled the local newspapers. Across the river, the University of Minnesota's east bank campus was growing, drawing students from farms and small towns, while automobiles were becoming a familiar sight on downtown streets. People in the city would have recognized 1915 as a year of prosperity mixed with unease about a war far across the ocean.
