St. Paul in 1915 was a city of more than 200,000 people, and wartime demand in Europe, where fighting had broken out in 1914, kept its wholesalers, packers, and shippers busy. Automobiles were beginning to share the streets with horse wagons and streetcars, and paved avenues were replacing dirt roads on the higher ground. The steamboat trade on the Mississippi had shrunk well below its earlier volume, and the river now carried mostly barges while the rail lines hugged its banks. Residents would have known the city for its neighborhood churches, ethnic lodges, and a lively rivalry with Minneapolis that filled the local newspapers.
